In Square's defense, Cloud is not an easy character to capture in the brief summaries of which they are so fond. Although he certainly embodies (if not embellishes) the role of "a mercenary who will take any job" during his introduction -- he gives off the aura of a man confident to a fault -- there is also a certain awkwardness about him the player cannot place until its source is revealed. Despite being a mercenary by profession, the attitude that comes with it is merely a guise for our hero to work under. Funnily enough, it is a guise that not even he, it's creator and alleged master, can recognize at first; what it was woven to protect lies buried deep within the folds of his memory.
